A Majestic Setting

Gorton Monastery, also known as The Church and Friary of St Francis, is a Grade II listed former Franciscan friary located on the outskirts of Manchester. It offers a magnificent setting for the most momentous of occasions and it’s breathtaking architecture make it one of the most unique wedding venues in the UK.

Constructed between 1866 and 1872, the building was first a home to Franciscan monks. Gorton Monastery is considered to be E.W. Pugin’s great architectural masterpiece and is known as ‘Manchester’s Taj Mahal’. One of my favourite aspects of wedding venues in Manchester is the vast array of unique settings on offer. Victoria Warehouse is only a short drive away from the Monastery yet you couldnt wish for a more different backdrop!

Saying ‘I Do’ In Style At Gorton Monastery

In 1977 it was recognised internationally for it’s architectural significance but was consecrated just over a decade later in 1989. It unfortunately then fell into disrepair and was left derelict for many years. With the help of the Building Preservation Trust, The Monastery then underwent an incredible restoration project and was transformed from its former ruins into the spectacle we see today.

The Great Nave is the main space at Gorton Monastery and boasts a magnificent vaulted ceiling and beautiful stained glass windows. Every angle of the building looks amazing on camera, making it the perfect venue for wedding videography.

Gorton Monastery Wedding Videography

With its visually stunning geometry and full exclusive hire, Gorton Monastery is a wedding venue like no other. The Monastery’s private enclosed garden provides a perfect spot for wedding photos, while the new purpose-built annexe is an ideal space for the wedding party to hang out while the Great Nave is turned around for your meal. The juxtaposition of the old and new architecture reminds me of the beautiful Dorfold Hall in nearby Cheshire.

The venue can accommodate up to 450 guests for dinner or up to 600 guests for a ceremony, making it a perfect venue for larger weddings. The Monastery also offers multi-faith wedding ceremonies, ensuring that couples of all backgrounds can celebrate their love in this unique and historic venue.

Gorton Monastery is a true masterpiece of architecture and is of great historical importance. Known as one of the most stunning examples of Gothic Revival architecture in the UK, it offers each it’s couples a jaw-dropping setting to tie the knot and I’m pretty sure there’s nothing else quite like it in the North West!
